Self-Drive Circuits: The Ultimate Road Trip Experience

A self-drive tour in Costa Rica gives you the freedom to go where you want, when you want, without having to depend on a bus, cab or other means of transport. What’s more, if you have a car at your disposal, you can take advantage of the stops along the way that we suggest in your Roadbook. You’ll also be able to dine or have lunch in the less accessible restaurants, some of which you’ll find recommended in your Roadbook on arrival. You’ll also be able to access viewpoints, viewpoints and waterfalls that are a little off the beaten track, without having to depend on anyone else. Once again, a list of beautiful secret spots will be revealed to you on arrival.

Costa Rica is a small country, so getting around in a rental car presents no major problems.
However, you should bear in mind that many of the country’s secondary roads are unpaved and, given the terrain, a 4×4 is preferable. If you want to visit the country off the main roads, you’ll need a good vehicle.

Last but not least, an autotour allows you to take alternate routes in the event of an accident on the road, traffic jams or bad weather. Leaving at the time you want, taking breaks when you want, is a real plus – in short, real freedom.

To make your self-drive tour a success, we provide you with a comprehensive roadbook. Clear stages, WAZE addresses (replaces GPS), Wifi in the car, suggestions to see along the way, a road map, zone maps, restaurant addresses, viewpoints, stops to make along the way. A real bible for your trip, so that everything runs smoothly and without you having to ask questions. All this is clearly explained on arrival by a member of Costa Rica Découverte.
Our experience through the most complete and personalized travel book available.

A tour designed by a trekker for trekkers.

A gentle start to the trip in Corcovado with a snorkelling trip to Isla del Caño. The next day, things get serious. You’ll cross Corcovado National Park from north to south and spend a rustic but fabulous night. You’ll be able to enjoy the park’s wildlife at your leisure, and your English-speaking naturalist guide will be on hand to give you some expert advice and explanations.

Leave the park at Carate and take the 4×4 to Puerto Jimenez.

This is where you pick up your rental car. Head for Rivas, at the foot of Costa Rica’s highest peak: Cerro Chirrripo.

The next day, you’ll climb this 12,000ft-high giant, then descend and head back towards the Quetzal region.

A last stop to observe this sacred Mayan bird. Costa Rica is the easiest place in the world to observe this bird, all year round.
