Beaches, luxury and idleness in Costa Rica

Day 1 : The western part of the capital is home to towns such as Escazu, Santa Ana and Ciudad Colon. The first, Escazu, is the wealthiest part of the city, with law firms, luxury apartments and commercial activities concentrated here. Santa Ana, its neighbor, is gradually moving in the same direction, but is still very rural and quieter.
Moving on a little further, Ciudad Colon, a rural municipality if ever there was one, is very typical and offers beautiful scenery and walks in the surrounding area. In summary, each could be described as follows: Escazu, the economic capital – Santa Ana, the lively provincial town and Ciudad Colon, the charm of the countryside.

Close to the capital, the region is lined with some beautiful beaches ideal for relaxing and surfing.
But it’s the Carara National Park, with its pairs of macaws, that attracts the most tourists, and the Tarcoles River, home to a colony of American crocodiles, some as long as 6 meters!
At sunrise and sunset, thousands of birds fly in to forage in the morning or return home at the end of the day.
It’s a transition between tropical dry and humid forests, hence its biodiversity.
One of the country’s most beautiful waterfalls, Bijagual, is within easy reach for good walkers.

• Birdwatching Private PN Carara – Entrance included – Duration : 4:00 : Area: 4,700 ha. Carara National Park is a bird-lover’s paradise. Of the 900 confirmed species in Costa Rica, 431 are found in and around Carara. The park is located in a transition zone between the dry forest of the north and the humid forest of the south, with characteristics of both.

Days 4, 5 and 6 : Mal Pais, Santa Teresa and Montezuma are well worth a visit. You’ll need a good 4×4 to enjoy the area’s trails. In the green season, adrenalin is guaranteed! Mal Pais begins where Santa Teresa, the more peaceful of the two villages, ends.The beaches of Santa Teresa, Hermosa and Manzanillo are magnificent, and it’s not unusual to find yourself alone.Isla Tortuga, off the coast of Montezuma, is a small island ideal for snorkeling and lazing on a beautiful white sand beach. Cabo Blanco Park and the Curú reserve have some great excursions in store.

ON THE AGENDA:

• Tour to Isla Tortuga – Duration : 7:00 – included meal : Boat trip to Isla Tortuga in the Gulf of Nicoya. This is one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful Pacific islands.On the program: snorkeling (superb seabed!), swimming and, with a bit of luck, dolphin watching. A great family activity. Lunch included.

Days 7, 8 and 9 : This part of the Guanacaste coast is one of the most popular in the country.
Tamarindo has developed intensively and offers a perfect seaside resort where restaurants follow souvenir stores. The region’s beaches are among the most beautiful in the country, even if the crowds have taken some of the charm away.
It’s the ideal place for sports enthusiasts who enjoy surfing, jet skiing, kayaking, diving and horseback riding. Playa Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Playa Negra, Playa Avellana and Playa Langosta are perfect for learning or perfecting the surfing that is so popular here.
Las Baulas National Park is one of the most important nesting grounds for leatherback turtles.

ON THE AGENDA:

• Snorkeling at Las Catalinas – Duration : 5:00 : Las Catalinas off Tamarindo is one of the country’s best diving and snorkeling spots. The volcanic rock formations are home to impressive underwater fauna and incredible visibility. Here you can discover sharks, turtles, manta rays and multicolored fish.

Drive to Tamarindo airport.
