The Rincon de la Vieja volcano is also a bird-watching mecca. Although best known for its hot springs and activities such as canyoning, horseback riding and canopy tours, the presence of birds on site is very important.

Ornithologists at Rincon de la Vieja

Many of the books written by ornithologists date back some twenty years, and the Ornithological Society of Costa Rica has decided to update their knowledge. Some of the bird species identified on the Caribbean side have been spotted in the Rincon volcano area, so perhaps this is an oversight in the census or a recent migration to this region of Guanacaste, which is what the experts on site will be trying to clarify.

A first count was carried out in September: 204 species were counted, and a second count is planned for April.

Joseph Bataille, director of the Hacienda Guachipelin, explains that this research will have an impact on tourism in the region, as many bird enthusiasts come to Costa Rica to observe them.
