Costa Rica’s Climate: two seasons, but how?

Costa Rica’s climate is typical of the tropics. There are two seasons: a dry season and a rainy season. The beginning and end of these seasons are determined by the intertropical convergence zone. This region of the planet, which lies in the tropics, changes position according to which hemisphere is more exposed to the sun over the course of the year. With this change in position, wind direction changes, creating the two seasons of the tropics.

Costa Rica’s climate is not as homogeneous as it may be in other parts of the tropics. It’s true that we have a dry season and a rainy season. However, the country’s rugged topography, and the presence of an ocean and a sea surrounding a narrow strip of land, mean that there are many exceptions to the rule.

We have systematized these variations in Costa Rica’s climate under two main zones of meteorological behavior: the Caribbean influence and the Pacific influence. These categories are far from being a scientific parameter, but a tool to help you better plan your trip to Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s Climate: Pacific Influence

Geographic Region: The entire Pacific coast and the regions between the coast and the continental divide (Guanacaste plains, west face of Rincon de la Vieja, west face of Tenorio, Monteverde, south face of , south face of Barva, south face of Irazu, Dota, Valle de El General – Coto Brus).

Dry season: from December to May.

Rainy season: from May to December.

Special features:
1- The rainy season arrives first on the Osa peninsula (mid-April) and then on the plains of Guanacaste (June).
2 – There’s a short week of cool, dry air when the climate turns to summer in the Pacific regions. Folklore has known this little dry period in the middle of the rainy season as the “Veranillo de San Juan” (“little summer of St. John” because historically it occurred around June 24, the feast of St. John).
3 – From September to the end of the period, “temporales” occur. These are days when it rains intermittently, day and night. These temporal events are responsible for maximum annual precipitation throughout the Pacific. They cannot be predicted. Travel is possible, but sun-seekers are advised to opt for another period.
4 – During the rainy season, rainfall generally occurs in the afternoon. Nights are generally dry and clear.

Costa Rica’s Climate: Caribbean Influence

Geographic Region: The entire Caribbean coast and the regions between the coast and the continental divide (Caribbean plains, Sarapiqui, northern slopes of Poas, northern slopes of Barva, northern slopes of Irazu, Turrialba valley, Boca Tapada, Arenal, Caño Negro, eastern slopes of Tenorio (Rio Celeste), western slopes of Rincon de la Vieja).

Dry season: March – April, July – late October.

Rainy season: November – March, May – July.

Special features:
1 – As a general rule, the Caribbean is more unstable than the Pacific. During the supposedly dry months of the Caribbean, it’s quite possible to have gray, rainy days.
2 – It’s important to understand that the Caribbean receives very wet winds all year round. These wet winds pour their moisture into the mountains and volcanoes. When these winds reach the Pacific, they are dry and cool, producing fine weather in the valleys and plains of the Pacific.
3 – The case of the Pacuare: the Pacuare River has its source in the Cerro de la Muerte (Pacific influence). However, the region of the river where rafting is practised is in the Caribbean. You might think that the best time for rafting is in the Caribbean summer. However, if you go rafting during the dry Caribbean months (July-October), you’re likely to encounter this much more abundant river than usual. The risk of cancelling your rafting trip is higher during the Pacific rainy season.
4- Rainfall in the Caribbean can occur at any time. However, they tend to occur mainly at night.

The middle of January. Moist winds from the Caribbean pour their humidity onto the volcanoes of the Cordillera Central.

How can I integrate all this into my travel plans?

It’s easy. Here’s a list of recommended tours based on the vacation season in the USA:

Christmas vacations: Pacific influence to be favored
Recommended itinerary: Frog tour

Traveling to Costa Rica with a baby can be a wonderful experience, as the country offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, stunning landscapes, and opportunities to discover nature. Animals, national parks, beaches, volcanoes—so many things to explore as a family. Children are very receptive to their surroundings, and Costa Rica is generally well-appreciated even by the youngest travelers. Costa Rica Découverte adapts itineraries to ensure the journey is smooth and hassle-free.

However, it requires careful planning to ensure the safety and comfort of your child.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for your trip to Costa Rica with a baby.

Preparing your family trip to Costa Rica

First and foremost, traveling with a young child requires a minimum of precaution. The child should be in good health and up to date with vaccinations. Prepare a first-aid kit with bandages, fever and pain medication, diarrhea remedies, mosquito repellent, a thermometer, etc. Consult your pediatrician for more information.

Vaccination

Costa Rica is a safe country in terms of hygiene, but before traveling, it is recommended to check necessary vaccines and medications. Traditional vaccines such as tetanus, DTP polio, whooping cough, and measles are highly recommended. If you are staying in certain countries before arriving in Costa Rica, you will need a yellow fever vaccination (see the list).

Bring a good mosquito repellent—or better yet, buy one locally—as some regions like Limon have occasional Dengue outbreaks. The Dengue vaccine is not recommended for those who have never been infected before.

Traveler’s diarrhea, commonly known as “Tourista,” is one of the most frequent travel-related illnesses. To avoid it, refrain from eating street food, wash your hands and your child’s hands regularly, and avoid tap water—even though it is potable in most areas. Also, avoid ice cubes in drinks.

If symptoms appear, seek medical advice promptly and stay hydrated to prevent dehydration. Fortunately, this is rare, and the country has an excellent healthcare network, including clinics, pharmacies, and hospitals nationwide.

Passports

The requirements for entering Costa Rica are simple. If you are staying for less than 180 days, no visa is required for European Union citizens or Swiss nationals.

Your passport must be valid for at least 24 hours after your return. However, we recommend renewing it in advance if it is close to expiration, as flight diversions to neighboring countries like the USA, Panama, or Colombia could cause issues with local authorities. A passport is required for children of all ages.

French law states that minors traveling with one or both parents do not need an exit authorization. However, if your child does not share your last name, carrying a birth certificate is recommended to avoid any complications.

If you have a layover in the USA or Canada, be sure to apply for your ESTA Visa for the USA and eTA for Canada—even for babies.

Flying with a Baby

If we had one piece of advice, it would be to choose the most direct flights possible. A direct flight is ideal; one layover is reasonable, but two or more can become exhausting and stressful. While direct flights are sometimes more expensive, they offer the best conditions for your little one. Until the age of two, children can travel on their parents’ lap. Beyond that, a separate seat is mandatory.

What outfits and accessories for baby?

For the flight, bring enough food to feed and change baby, as well as mom and dad, for the entire flight, and even a little more in case of delays or untimely changes. Lotions, creams, bottle water, powdered milk, baby food… Everything you need can stay with you in the cabin, with no restrictions on liquids. However, on-board personnel can provide you with water if you need it.

The ideal suitcase for your little one:

• YOUR child’s comforter, pacifiers or any other toy he’s used to having. This will help reassure him, as travel can be a little unsettling for our little ones,
• Lightweight clothing,
• Light, long pants
• Long-sleeved T-shirts to protect against mosquitoes at the end of the day,
• Lycra for protection against the sun,
• A cap with a neck flap,
• Sunglasses, as it’s very hot here,
• A sweater and/or sweatshirt,
• Rain gear,
• Water bottle, baby bottles,
• Up-to-date health record…

Some would say that a stroller would just be a burden. But if, as we recommend, you rent a car, it will come in handy in restaurants, airports and impromptu naps.

Car seats are provided free of charge by our rental companies.

For hiking, a backpack so you can keep your camera in hand

Numerous specialized websites give you tips on travelling with baby.

What’s the budget for a family trip?

Costa Rica is a developed country in Central America with a reputation as a somewhat expensive destination. This varies according to each person’s choices, and we’ll give you an estimate below, based on the different criteria and categories of stay envisaged.

Small budgets

If you travel in a hostel with shared rooms and bathrooms, using a public bus and doing only free or low-cost activities, you can estimate a stay of around 3,500 euros for 2 people, including round-trip tickets Paris/San José (1,000 euros per person) for two weeks in Costa Rica.
This option is not recommended for very young children.

Average budgets

Do you like a little more comfort, do you want private bathrooms, do you want to be independent with a rental car? This is certainly the best way to discover the country. Alternating between basic hotels and some slightly superior ones, and renting a standard vehicle, the flight + stay budget is $4,900 for two people for two weeks.

Higher budgets

Are you looking for a comfortable vacation, a top-class hotel, a 4×4 car rental and plenty of activities, even if you have to pay for them? The 14-day trip in a 3/4-star hotel, with a 4×4 that will take you wherever you want to go, will cost you around 8900 euros with flights from Paris.

Luxury budgets

This travel category is for those who love luxury, service and personalized attention. It’s also the category without limits. You’ll find plenty of luxury lodges and dream villas for an exceptional stay. Beware, however, that many hotels in this category are reserved for adults only. What’s more, these are very expensive hotels, so it’s best to book well in advance. It’s possible to indulge yourself for as little as 12,000 euros for two people and two dream weeks in Costa Rica.

All these budgets are indicative only, and we adapt our stays to your wishes, your budget and your particular requests. Don’t hesitate to ask us for a quote to find out how much you need to budget for your ideal trip.

What criteria should you take into account when choosing a Costa Rica family tour?

To ensure that your trip goes as smoothly as possible, there are a few essential criteria to bear in mind.

Travel structure

The duration of the flight is often tiring and baby, like mom and dad, has a bit of trouble settling down.

The length of your stay is another factor to consider. Long-haul trips are generally tiring, and it would be a shame to bring a baby for just a few days. Take your time, and at least two weeks, to get the most out of your trip without making everyone tired and irritated. If you don’t have enough time off, don’t go so far.

Not all stages are suitable for toddlers. For families, we recommend the following: San José, Arenal, Monteverde, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Samara, Manuel Antonio, Uvita, San Gerardo de Dota. As far as Corcovado is concerned, the two resorts of San Pedrillo and La Sirena are not suitable for babies. Arrival by boat can be a bit tricky, with intense humid heat and few rest areas.

The climat

Costa Rica’s hot, humid climate is an important criterion, especially if you arrive in January or February, the height of winter in Europe. You’ll need to keep well hydrated and rest during the hottest hours of the day.

Insurance

Travel insurance is essential. Indeed, many families don’t protect themselves, and a minor accident, boo-boo or illness can be very costly, because as a tourist, you’ll be directed straight to the private clinics. A simple operation very quickly costs 5,000 to 6,000 euros, and you’ll have to make an advance payment. When you return home, your social security system will only cover up to its ceiling, with a lot of red tape. We recommend that you take out insurance when you buy your tickets.

The seasons

A recurring question when planning a trip to Costa Rica is what’s the best time of year to travel. While many tourists only want good weather and come in January/February or March, this is also the hottest and most touristic period. Parks are full and walks can be intense. By the sea, on the beach, it’s not uncommon to reach 35 or even 40 degrees in the shade. This isn’t necessarily the most pleasant thing to do with a toddler. We recommend the months of May, June, July, August and November. The nights are cooler, and baby will be grateful. The climate in the tropics is very different, and this aspect is essential to take into account.

Managing jet lag: our advice

As mentioned above, Costa Rica is a long way away. In winter, we have a 7:00 time difference from France and Europe in general, and in summer 8:00. Dealing with the time difference when traveling with a baby can be a challenge, but good planning will help your child adapt more easily.

Make sure your baby stays well hydrated during the flight by giving him water or breast milk/formula. Flights are dehydrating.

Avoid over-stimulation: maintain a calm, peaceful environment, especially at night, to help your baby fall asleep more easily.

As soon as you arrive in Costa Rica, try to adapt to local time as quickly as possible. Expose your baby to daylight to help regulate his biological clock, and put him to bed early.

Take care of your own sleep. Well-rested parents are better able to look after their baby during the journey.

If you have a bedtime routine for your baby at home, try to recreate it during the trip. This will signal to your baby that it’s time to go to sleep.

Avoid long car journeys the day after or two days after your arrival.

What food to feed your baby in Costa Rica?

For meals, if your child is not yet a solid eater, we recommend that you pack a few ready-to-eat salted meals, as these are hard to find in supermarkets.

On the other hand, you’ll find everything you need for diapers, baby formula, sweetened baby food, compotes and yoghurt in even the most remote grocery stores. So don’t go overboard…

In restaurants, don’t hesitate to ask waiters to make you homemade mashed potatoes, porridge and minced meat or fish. We also recommend that you take with you :

cookies,

ready-to-eat savoury meals,

drinking bottles,

and of course, ALWAYS take mineral water with you.

You can also introduce baby to new tastes. Take advantage of this trip to introduce him to exotic flavors. This is the realm of bananas, pineapple, avocado, mango and, of course, AGUA DE PIPA, coconut water. Make him suck the flesh of the coconut and he’ll thank you for it. Ice creams are quite common, and specialist stores like POP’S are popular even with toddlers. Most restaurants offer baby seats.

Which mode of transport is best for a trip to Costa Rica with baby?

As we mentioned earlier, the best way to travel with a baby is by car. Renting a car means you can enjoy the country and adapt to your child at all times. You can stop whenever you like, change him, stretch his legs and always have his toys, cuddly toy, cookies or bottle close at hand.

Independence is the secret. No impossible schedules to keep, no other people to wait on or fetch. In short, true freedom. You can punctuate your journeys with relaxing breaks and short visits, so you don’t get stressed out.

With a rental car, you can leave accessories such as strollers, car seats and baby equipment in the trunk at all times, and have them with you all the time.

With a self-drive tour, you can visit a national park, a volcano or a beach as and when you like, with no time constraints.

What type of accommodation should I choose to stay in Costa Rica with my baby?

For itinerant stays, the best option is to stay in a hotel. You don’t need to make any special arrangements. We reserve the best rooms for you, with a bed adapted to your child’s needs. Breakfast is taken at the hotel, so you can start the day with a full belly. It’s undoubtedly the most comfortable.
Many accommodations offer relaxation areas around the pool or a lovely viewpoint. Hotels with large properties usually have trails that allow you to explore the surroundings without having to move around too much. Lodges or cabinas are particularly attentive to families with young children, and local children will often come to say hello to your baby.

Baby’s rhythm

Your baby’s rhythm will set the tempo for the trip. We recommend that you keep in mind that a little space is essential. At Costa Rica découverte, we prefer hotels with bungalows or terraces. In fact, during your child’s nap, having a space of your own, a little out of the way, will enable you to enjoy this moment while leaving baby in peace and quiet.
Some hotels also offer connected rooms. In other words, large rooms separated by a door, much like at home. So you can keep your privacy while staying close to your little one.

The restaurants

A point often overlooked, but in our opinion essential, is the proximity of restaurants. Breakfast can be taken at the hotel, lunch can be taken anywhere, depending on the day’s program, but in the evening, your child is likely to be tired. Taking the car out to eat can quickly become a real chore. A hotel with a restaurant means you can have dinner quickly, but more importantly, you can let your baby sleep in the stroller during the meal. All you have to do is slide him into bed on the way back, and he’ll have no trouble at all. He’ll be calm and serene, and so will you.

We’ve gone over the preparations, the plane journey, the formalities, the accommodation and the itinerary with baby. Now let’s move on to the crucial point: activities. It’s important to realize that many things simply won’t be possible. But what is actually possible in Costa Rica?

Here are the possible activities by age group. An overview of the immeasurable variety the country has to offer its visitors.

From 1 month to 1 year

You can enjoy the beaches at your leisure. Costa Rica has some wonderful family-friendly ones. You can relax on the sand, have a picnic and let your little one play in the soft sand and shade of the mangroves. The most child-friendly are, in our opinion, on the Caribbean coast: playa Blanca, playa Cocles, playa Chiquita, playa Cahuita, and on the Pacific coast, playa Mina, playa Pelada, playa San Juanillo, playa Samara, Punta Islita, playa Coyote, playa Buenavista, playa Hermosa (Uvita). Here’s a short article on the most beautiful in Costa Rica.

Wildlife watching: Costa Rica is famous for its biodiversity. You can go on excursions to observe wildlife, including monkeys, exotic birds, sloths and turtles. Many reserves and parks are particularly suitable for the very young.

Discovering the botanical gardens offers a peaceful and educational experience for families. Your baby can explore plants, flowers and nature in a safe environment.

Boat trips: boat trips along Costa Rica’s rivers and canals are an excellent opportunity to see the flora and fauna, while offering a safe environment for toddlers. Floating boats in particular are well suited to this age group.

Relaxing in thermal springs: Costa Rica is famous for its natural thermal waters. Some offer shallow pools and relaxation areas for families. Little ones are welcome.

Discover the local culture: with your little one, visit local markets, attend traditional festivals and discover Costa Rican culture. The locals are generally very family-friendly, and your little one will soon be the center of attention.

Wildlife sanctuaries: Costa Rica is home to many wildlife sanctuaries where you can see exotic animals up close. These places are often the perfect place for wildlife and children to interact. However, you won’t be able to touch or stroke them.

1 to 2 years

You can do everything that has been said above, of course, but also :

The suspension bridges are great walks to take, even with a baby. A truly colorful discovery of nature.

Discover Costa Rican rural life by visiting farms where toddlers can interact with farm animals.

Boat trips on rivers or along the coast allow little ones to enjoy the experience in complete safety.

Visits to national parks such as Arenal, Tenorio, Manuel Antonio, Rincon de la Vieja and Cahuita. These parks have short, easy trails, so that children can follow them without worry.

From 2 to 5 years

This is the age of discovery. Young children are wide-eyed and curious by nature.

Toddlers aged 2 to 5 can take part in boat trips to snorkel in shallow waters.

Some cooking schools offer child-friendly courses where children can help prepare traditional dishes..

Some of the canopies are also accessible to children.

Horseback riding with Mom and Dad and their guide is a great way to discover new things.

From age 5 upwards, most activities are possible, apart from scuba diving, canyoning and rafting. Costa Rica offers a multitude of sports, and it’s impossible not to find something to suit your taste.

Here’s an overview of the essentials for a trip with baby to Costa Rica. Here are a few tours that can be adapted to families.

Costa Rica may be famous for its pristine beaches and lush rainforests, but it’s also home to numerous gardens that produce a wide variety of tropical fruits.

On your Costa Rica tours, it would be a crime not to sample all these gustatory wonders. When traveling in Costa Rica, visit the weekend farmers’ markets – ferias – enjoy a fruit smoothie in a local restaurant or simply stop to pick a ripe mango. Come and discover unfamiliar and simply succulent flavors during your trip to Costa Rica.

Mango

This brilliant fruit is tender and succulent, making it a favorite in the region. The large, orange-red variety is known in Costa Rica as manga tomi and offers a sweet but slightly tart taste with a stringy texture. Smaller, kidney-shaped mangoes, known locally as mango pita, are milder and sweeter. Try a green, unripe mango, which is often sold on sidewalks, sliced and served with lime and chili as many ticos eat it. Delicious!

Coconut

Lying on the beach sipping coconut water is an image of paradise. And in Costa Rica, large coconuts (also known as pipa), still green and filled with a clear, semi-sweet liquid, are often sold in seaside towns along the coast, or even in many less popular beaches. The flesh inside is soft and delicate.

Smaller, ripe, brown coconuts (known as coco playero) reveal a harder, thicker pulp beneath their woody shells. This flesh is often used in Costa Rican desserts, bean dishes and Caribbean rice. Certainly one of the most widely used fruits in Costa Rica.

Its oil is used in cosmetics and for hair care.

Granadilla

If you break the orange shell on this passion fruit, you’ll find small grayish edible seeds, mixed with a jelly-like substance. Although they may not look appetizing to you, granadillas are sweet and delicious, which is why they’re so popular in the region.

There are two main varieties of granadilla: yellow granadilla (Passiflora ligularis) and purple granadilla (Passiflora edulis). Yellow granadilla is also known as “grenadia” or “parcha” in some regions, while purple granadilla is more commonly known as “maracuya” or “fruta de la pasión” (passion fruit). Both varieties have a hard, shiny outer skin that can vary in color from pale yellow to dark purple.

Granadilla is often eaten fresh, by cutting the fruit in half and extracting the pulp with a spoon. It is also used in smoothies, desserts, ice creams and sauces. Granadilla is appreciated for its refreshing flavor and nutritional profile, rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. You’ll easily find it in local markets and fruit stalls in Costa Rica, offering locals and travelers alike a delicious tropical fruit experience.

Passion Fruit

This slightly larger variety of passion fruit has a more durable yellow skin and is mainly used to make juice.
Once sliced in half, its interior reveals a bright orange nectar filled with edible seeds. If you’d like to try eating it straight out of the shell, sprinkle a little sugar to temper the tart, acidic flavor, which is usually very surprising the first time you try it.

Passion fruit is an excellent antioxidant-loaded fruit to incorporate into your diet during your Costa Rica vacation!

Guayaba

Guayaba, also known as guava, is a fruit widely grown and enjoyed in Costa Rica, as well as in other tropical regions of the world. The guayaba is the fruit of the guava tree, a member of the Myrtaceae family.

Guayabas are round or oval fruits with a thin, light-green skin that can be smooth or grainy Guayaba somewhat similar to a pear. The inner flesh is usually white, pink or yellow, depending on the variety, and contains many small seeds. The texture of the flesh also varies according to variety, but it is generally soft, juicy and fragrant, with a characteristic sweet-tart flavor.

Guayabas are often eaten fresh, either by biting directly into the fruit, or cut into quarters and scooped out. They are also used in juices, smoothies, jellies, jams, desserts and even savory dishes in some kitchens.

Guayaba is appreciated for its delicious flavor, fragrant aroma and health benefits, as it is rich in vitamins C and A, fiber and antioxidants. It is also often considered a staple of Costa Rican cuisine, where it is widely grown and consumed throughout the year.

Mamones

“Mamones” are actually known botanically as Melicoccus bijugatus, and are also called genip or quenepa in other parts of Latin America. They are a popular tropical fruit in Costa Rica and other parts of Central America.

Mamones are small, round fruits, usually about the size of a golf ball, with a thick, green skin that can be difficult to remove. Beneath this skin lies juicy, sweet and slightly tart flesh, as well as one or more large seeds.

Mamones are often eaten fresh, crunching directly into the pulp to extract the nectar. This fruit is appreciated for its refreshing flavor and unique texture.

Mamones are often sold by street vendors or at local markets, especially during the rainy season. They are generally eaten as a snack in summer, and are much appreciated by Costa Ricans and visitors alike for their delicious taste and refreshment in the tropical climate. They taste a little like limes and have different names in the Caribbean, including quenapa, genip, guaya and lemoncillo.

Guanabana

Guanabanas are large, spiky fruits similar in shape and size to a soccer. It is most often used to make a creamy juice. When sliced open, pockets of soft white flesh can be pulled out of the fruit like string cheese, leaving the large black seeds behind. They taste like a combination of pineapple, banana and coconut. Sound familiar? No ? Well, come to Costa Rica and see for yourself!

Tamarind

Tamarind is the fruit of the tamarind tree and is a very popular food in Asian and Latin American cuisine. In Costa Rica, they are used to make fruit juice, paste, syrup and jam. The pulp is both sweet and sour, making it a candy when covered in sugar.

Tamarind is a fruit rich in flavor and vitamins B, C and E, as well as fiber (20 grams per 100 grams of tamarind). It is also used as a medicine in many tropical countries to treat various ailments. The tamarind’s flesh is very dense, with an intense, dark brown color. Its taste is sweet and sour, and can vary according to the tamarind’s state of ripeness.

Jocote

Between July and August, this is the period when Costa Rica’s exquisite jocotes – Spondias purpurea- are found in abundance. It originated in southern Mexico and Central America. It then spread to the Caribbean and tropical America.
Its name comes from the Nahuatl “xocotl”, meaning “sour”.
The tree can reach heights of over 10 meters, with countless branches forming an open crown. The fruit is easily visible on the branches, as the tree loses most of its leaves during harvesting.
Green jocotes are a source of fiber and iron, while ripe jocotes are higher in sugars and other substances with strong antioxidant power.

Cas

It belongs to the Myrtaceae family and is native to Costa Rica. Similar in appearance and characteristics to the guava, the cas (Psidium friedrichsthalianum Nied) is a fruit with a sweet-tart taste, much appreciated for ice cream and in juice. Cas comes from the word “Kas” in Brunca, the mother tongue of the indigenous Boruca people of Central America. This type of guava is also known as guayaba agria, guayaba de coronilla, guayaba del Chaco, arrayán, guayaba de Costa Rica or guayaba de agua.

This tropical fruit is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin E, phosphorus, folic acid, fiber and has a prebiotic effect. Its consumption promotes intestinal health and also helps to absorb iron and strengthen the immune system. A must-taste as it is extremely refreshing.

Banana

The banana, el banano in Spanish and not banana, nothing extraordinary you might ask?

Yet the banana is one of Costa Rica’s most emblematic fruits, and plays a major role in the country’s economy. Costa Rica is one of the world’s leading banana producers and exporters, with banana plantations covering vast tracts of land in the country’s coastal regions, particularly on the Atlantic coast.

The banana variety most commonly grown and exported by Costa Rica is the Cavendish banana, which is appreciated for its sweet flavor, creamy texture and durability. However, we recommend that you try the small criollo bananas – Creoles – to taste a unique banana. This variety is reserved for local consumption.

Banana production is an important industry for the Costa Rican economy, generating jobs for thousands of people and making a significant contribution to the country’s exports. Costa Rican bananas are mainly destined for international markets, notably North America and Europe, where they are sold fresh in Super Markets or processed into by-products such as fruit juices and desserts.

Bananas and plantains are also staples in the Costa Rican diet. They are eaten fresh as a snack or added to a variety of dishes (plantain), including gallo pinto (mixed rice and beans), fruit smoothies and traditional desserts such as banana cake.

Pitaya or Dragon Fruit

The pitaya or dragon fruit is a magnificent tropical fruit grown in Costa Rica. The variety, which is pink inside and out, is named after its Costa Rican country of origin: Costarricencis.

The outside is bright pink, the inside magenta. The flesh is studded with small edible black seeds. There are, however, several varieties of dragon fruit. The pitaya is a fruit that many people overlook because they don’t know what it is or how to eat it. Yet it’s a must-try on a trip to Costa Rica.

It’s easy to cut and eat with a spoon. It can also be juiced with many other fruits, such as bananas and guanabanas. It’s a fruit rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidant properties to help the cardiovascular, immune and digestive systems.

Caimite

Caimite is the fruit of a tropical tree native to Central America and the Caribbean, particularly Costa Rica. The botanical name of the tree is Chrysophyllum cainito and it belongs to the Sapotaceae family.
The pulp inside is soft and juicy, white to cream-colored, with a sweet, slightly acidic taste. The texture is often described as creamy and resembles condensed milk, hence the nickname “milk apple”. The consistency resembles ice cream. Its indefinable taste is a little like apple and persimmon.

Caimite is usually eaten fresh by cutting it in half and eating the pulp with a spoon. It is also sometimes used to prepare juices, smoothies or desserts. This fruit is appreciated for its delicate flavor and subtle aroma, but it is important to note that the seeds inside the fruit are poisonous and should not be eaten. The caimito fruit is high in vitamin C and flavonoids with a powerful antioxidant effect. Its vitamin C content is very similar to that of oranges, and the antioxidant effect is enhanced by the presence of flavonoid pigments.

Mamon Chino – Rambutan

The rambutan is an exotic fruit native to Southeast Asia, but is also cultivated in other tropical regions of the world, including some Central American countries such as Costa Rica. The botanical name of the rambutan is Nephelium lappaceum and, like the lychee, it belongs to the Sapindaceae family.

The fruit of the rambutan is a small berry-like drupe, about 3 to 6 centimetres long. It is covered with soft, spiny hairs, giving it a distinctly exotic appearance. The color of the skin varies from red to yellow or green, depending on the fruit’s degree of ripeness.

Inside, the rambutan’s juicy, sweet pulp surrounds a single seed, similar to that of the lychee. The pulp is generally translucent, with a tender texture and a mild, slightly acidic flavor, often compared to that of grapes or lychees.

Rambutan is usually eaten fresh by peeling the outer skin and eating the pulp directly, or by removing it from the seed. It can also be used in desserts, juices, fruit salads and sweet and savoury dishes.

The natives of Central America also used rambutan leaves and bark to make dyes and inks.

Noni

Noni is an irregularly shaped fruit that grows on small bushes or trees. Noni (or mulberry) is native to Polynesia. Noni was originally used by the Hawaiians as a tonic to treat many ailments.

Noni has a long history of use in the traditional medicines of the regions where it grows. Almost every part of the noni plant, including fruit, leaves, flowers and roots, has been used for medicinal purposes. The noni fruit itself has a strong, unpleasant odor, and its taste is generally described as slightly bitter and tart.
Noni fruit is full of powerful antioxidants and compounds that apparently increase vitality. Among its many benefits are its high selenium content, which promotes skin elasticity and health; xeronine, which promotes health and regeneration of cell structure; scopoletin, which has great anti-inflammatory properties; and terpin, which helps detoxify the body. Many people stay away from this amazing superfood because of its unpleasant smell.

Cacao

To speak of Costa Rican fruit without mentioning cocoa would be an unforgivable oversight. Indeed, Costa Rica has the ideal climate for growing the fruit of the drink of the Gods. Cocoa plantations are found mainly on the Caribbean coast and in certain parts of the Pacific region. Cocoa production in Costa Rica is often focused on quality rather than quantity. Many small family farms grow cocoa in the traditional way, using sustainable farming methods. This produces high-quality cocoa beans, often prized by artisan chocolatiers for their unique aromas.

Visitors can tour cocoa plantations, take part in guided tours to learn more about the growing and processing process, and sample a variety of cocoa products, from chocolate to hot drinks.

The benefits of cocoa are many. It’s an antioxidant, an anti-stress agent, improves brain function, helps intestinal transit… In short, eating at least 70% cocoa is a source of rejuvenation for everyone. But beware: added sugar is often of poor quality. So it’s important to check the origins and ingredients of the chocolate you eat.

This short list of Costa Rican fruits is far from exhaustive. You’ll see a multitude of others, and we encourage you to taste them during your Costa Rica tour. It’s one of the attractions of travel to discover new, exotic flavors.

Coco Island is a natural treasure located in the Pacific Ocean, some 341 km off the west coast of Costa Rica. Known for its exceptional biodiversity and crystal-clear waters, this little piece of land lost in the middle of the Pacific is often described as a paradise for divers and nature lovers. It’s also surrounded by legends, pirates and hidden treasures, adding to its mystery and appeal. Isla del Coco is part of Costa Rica’s national park network, SINAC.

Geography and climate

Coco Island is a volcanic island of approximately 24 km², the only island in the eastern Pacific with a tropical rainforest. It is surrounded by steep cliffs, spectacular waterfalls and dense vegetation. The island has a humid tropical climate, with abundant rainfall throughout the year, particularly between May and November. Temperatures vary little, generally remaining between 73 and 80 degrees F.

Conservation and world heritage status

Recognizing the island’s ecological importance, Costa Rica declared Coco Island a national park in 1978. In 1997, the island was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also protected by various environmental laws and access is strictly controlled.

Despite its protection, Coco Island faces a number of threats, most notably illegal fishing, particularly of sharks for their fins. The Costa Rican government, with the help of international organizations, is making constant efforts to monitor and protect the waters around the island.

History and Legends

Discovered in 1526 by Spanish explorer Joan Cabezas, Coco Island has long been associated with stories of pirates and hidden treasure. Legends have it that pirates hid their treasures here. The most famous of these treasures is Lima’s, an immense booty stolen from the Spanish in the early 19th century.

Benito Bonito Legend

Another of the most famous legends concerns the pirate Benito Bonito, nicknamed “Espada Sangrienta” (the bloody sword). According to legend, Bonito hid an immense treasure on the island, the spoils of numerous plunders in South America. This legend has fueled the imagination of adventurers and treasure hunters for centuries. Numerous expeditions have been organized in an attempt to find this mythical treasure, but none have ever succeeded.

It’s important to note that these stories are often exaggerated and romanticized. Although pirates have been known to frequent Coco Island, the existence of hidden treasure remains uncertain. Nevertheless, these legends have helped forge the island’s mysterious reputation and attract adventurers from all over the world.

Origin of the name

The name Isla del Coco seems to derive from the quantity of coconuts that litter the island’s beaches. But another legend has it that coconuts contain an enormous amount of water, just like the island, which has the distinction of having a large quantity of drinking water for miles around. An oasis in the middle of the ocean.

Ecosystems and biodiversity

Coco Island is a true sanctuary of biodiversity. It is covered in tropical rainforest, home to many endemic species of plants and animals.

Terrestrial fauna

The island is home to several bird species, some of which are endemic, such as the Coco Island finch and the Coco Island cuckoo. Reptiles include lizards, harmless snakes and frogs, some of which are also endemic. There are no land mammals on the island, the five that exist having been introduced by man, either intentionally or accidentally.

Marine fauna

However, it’s underwater that Coco Island reveals all its splendor. The waters around the island are a hot spot for marine biodiversity. They are home to large populations of tiger sharks, manta rays, tuna, dolphins and even whales. The coral reefs are populated by brightly-colored tropical fish, corals, molluscs and other marine invertebrates.

Coco Island is most famous for its large concentrations of hammerhead sharks, which attract divers from all over the world. Hammerheads gather in large schools around the island, particularly near Bajo Alcyone, a famous dive site.

A total of 45 endemic marine species have been recorded in Cocos Island National Park, representing almost 50% of Costa Rica’s endemism.

Flora

Although this little rock lost in the middle of the ocean is tiny, it is home to no fewer than 297 species of vascular plants, belonging to 196 genera and 82 families. Of this total wealth, 220 (74%) are native species and 77 (26%) are introduced species.

Tourism and activities

Coco Island is not easily accessible, which contributes to its preservation. Visits are regulated and the only visitors allowed are generally divers and researchers. Access is exclusively by boat from the Costa Rican coast. Diving cruises depart mainly from Puntarenas, Costa Rica, and the journey to the island takes around 1.5 days (36 hours).

Scuba diving

The main activity on Coco Island is scuba diving. Divers can explore famous sites such as Bajo Alcyone, Shark Fin Rock, and Manuelita. These sites offer spectacular encounters with sharks, rays, schools of fish, and colorful corals. Underwater visibility is often excellent, making for a memorable diving experience.

The main dive sites around Cocos Island are:

Bajo Alcyone, known for its schools of hammerhead sharks, manta rays and other schools of fish.

Manuelita Garden, where you can observe manta rays, marbled rays, schools of Creole wrasse and hammerhead sharks.

Dos Amigos Grande, a small islet with a 13-metre-high arch. Hammerhead sharks, rainbow runners and snappers call the area home.

Bird Island, Chatham Bay: to the south-east of Manuelita, this site offers a wide variety of frogfish, lobsters, moray eels, rays, white-tip sharks and hammerheads.

Hiking

Although the island is mainly visited for diving, it also offers hiking opportunities for those wishing to explore its lush rainforest. Hiking trails lead to panoramic viewpoints, waterfalls and secluded coves. However, hiking is strictly supervised to minimize impact on the island’s fragile environment.

Scientific Importance

Coco Island is a site of major scientific importance. Researchers come from all over the world to study its unique ecosystems, both terrestrial and marine. Studies of the island’s shark populations, coral reefs and endemic species provide valuable information for conservation and protected area management.

How to get to Cocos Island?

To reach Cocos Island, some 550 kilometers off the Costa Rican coast, the adventure often begins with a flight to San José. From there, it’s on to a specialized cruise departing from Puntarenas. These cruises offer not only transportation, but also accommodation in comfortable cabins and the chance to dive in the biodiversity-rich waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The sea voyage generally lasts between 36 and 40 hours, allowing passengers to fully appreciate the remoteness and isolation that give this destination its unique charm. Prices start at $3,000 / person for 7 nights.
For those seeking an even more personalized experience, it is possible to charter a private yacht, although this option requires a much larger budget. Once there, visitors are greeted by almost untouched nature, majestic cliffs and endemic fauna that make Cocos Island a place of exceptional ecological richness.
Places are limited and cruises are often fully booked. It’s best to plan your trip a year or so in advance to ensure your place.

Costa Rica travel extension and diving Isla del Coco

Many divers who book a diving holiday to Isla del Coco also want to enjoy Costa Rica from the continental side. Costa Rica Découverte offers extensions, whether you’re traveling to Costa Rica as a family, an individual or a couple. These extensions can be booked before or after the cruise.
These stays can range from a few days to variable durations. However, if you’d like to visit Costa Rica’s Cahuita National Park on the Caribbean side, for example, you’ll need to allow a good week’s time to get the most out of your trip. Although Costa Rica is a small country, driving times are long and generally tiring. We therefore recommend tour extensions of between 5 and 10 days.

Coco Island is an outstanding example of Costa Rica’s wealth and commitment to conservation. For those lucky enough to be able to visit it, the island offers an unforgettable experience for adventurers and nature lovers alike.

Exotic and fascinating fauna

Corcovado National Park is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, making it an ideal place for couples with a passion for animal watching. It’s important to note, however, that Costa Rica’s national parks are not fenced or gated. Here, wildlife roams without boundaries. If you choose accommodation close to these protected areas, your chances of observing a multitude of animals increase considerably.

You’ll be able to admire iconic species such as pumas, Baird’s tapirs, howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, stingrays, crocodiles and even dolphins and whales off the coast.

Depending on the resort, you can also enjoy a swim in a beautiful waterfall in the heart of the rainforest for a wild and natural experience. You’ll cross rios and enjoy magical views.

Intimate, secluded beaches

Corcovado is bordered by pristine beaches where you can relax in total privacy.

Some are only accessible by sea.

Here are some of the region’s most emblematic beaches.

Playa Llorona

Description : Playa Llorona is one of the park’s most secluded and unspoiled beaches. Accessible by boat or by a long hike through the forest, it is often deserted, offering a true experience of communion with nature. The beach is bordered by steep cliffs and ends in a small waterfall that flows into the ocean.

Fauna : visitors can spot scarlet macaws flying over the beach, iguanas sunning themselves on the rocks, capuchin monkeys and, more rarely, puma or tapir footprints.

Playa San Pedrillo

Description : playa San Pedrillo is a spectacular beach located near one of the park’s ranger stations. It is surrounded by dense jungle, offering a striking contrast between the intense green of the forest and the deep blue of the ocean. This beach is often the starting point for hikes in the northern part of the park.

Fauna : the area is rich in wildlife, with howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys and coatis frequently spotted near the beach. Snorkelers can also explore the reefs on either side of the beach.

Playa Madrigal

Description : playa Madrigal is a secluded beach located south of the Sirena resort. Accessible only on foot or by boat, it is one of the park’s most peaceful beaches. The sand is golden and the beach is lined with coconut palms, offering an idyllic setting for those looking to relax away from it all.

Fauna : the clear waters of playa Madrigal are ideal for snorkeling. There is an abundance of tropical fish, rays and the occasional sea turtle. On the beach, it’s not uncommon to spot a tapir.

Playa Carate

Description : Playa Carate is located at the southern end of the park, close to the entrance to Corcovado Park in La Leona. This long sandy beach is often the first (or last) stop for visitors hiking in the park. It’s more accessible than some of the park’s other beaches, but still very wild.

Fauna : Playa Carate is a nesting ground for sea turtles, and it’s not uncommon to see traces of their nests in the sand. The beach is also an excellent place to observe seabirds, as well as the monkeys that inhabit the trees lining the beach.

Playa La Leona

Description : located near the park entrance, playa La Leona is the first beach visitors discover on entering the park, in the La Leona sector. This beach is known for its spectacular setting, with jungle-covered hills that slope straight down to the sea.

Fauna : playa La Leona is a good place to observe spider monkeys, sloths and a wide variety of tropical birds. Visitors can also take advantage of the tides to explore the natural pools that form in the rocks.

Luxury and ecotourism

This region of Costa Rica and the famous Corcovado National Park are first and foremost a destination for nature lovers and ecotourists. Hotels and lodges combine luxury, comfort and service in the heart of the jungle, in a fragile ecosystem that requires major preservation efforts.

Let’s hope that these combined efforts will enable species such as jaguars, Macaw macaws and tree anteaters to thrive and no longer be listed as threatened or endangered.

Geography and Context

Tenorio Volcano National Park is located in the Cordillera de Guanacaste in northern Costa Rica. It covers an area of around 12,810 hectares and is dominated by the Tenorio volcano, a stratovolcano with four peaks. The park has been a protected area since 1995, and is part of Costa Rica’s network of natural parks and reserves (SINAC).

Tenorio Park is characterized by an impressive diversity of ecosystems, ranging from tropical rainforests to cloud forests and high-altitude zones. This diversity is largely due to the variation in altitude, which ranges from 600 to over 1,900 meters above sea level. The region’s climate is fairly rainy. The weather is often sunny in the morning, becoming overcast in the afternoon.

How do I get there?

Just 1:45 north of Arenal Volcano National Park, access is fairly easy. The small town of Bijagua is the closest to the park. If you’re coming from the beaches of Guanacaste, you’ll need to pass through Cañas before reaching Bijagua.

The main roads are in very good condition. Secondary roads into the park require a 4×4.

Main attractions

The Río Celeste

Description : The Río Celeste is without doubt Tenorio’s most famous attraction. This river is renowned for its intense turquoise-blue color, which seems almost unreal. This color is the result of a chemical reaction between the sulfur and calcium carbonate present in the water. The phenomenon begins at a specific point in the river called Los Teñideros.
Swimming is now prohibited in the national park, but the view alone is worth the detour. However, enthusiasts will have no trouble bathing in the Rio Celeste at spots upstream or downstream of the park. Some nearby lodges have private access to the Rio Celeste. The river is not exclusive to the national park.

Celeste River waterfall

Description : Another of the park’s major attractions is the Rio Celeste waterfall, about 1.5 km from the main trailhead. The waterfall falls from a height of approximately 30 metres into a natural pool surrounded by lush vegetation. The turquoise blue of the water and the intense green of the forest are a supernatural sight. It is, without doubt, the most photogenic waterfall in Costa Rica and Central America.
The hike to the Rio Tenorio waterfall is relatively easy. In recent years, a staircase has been added, making the descent much more suitable for all types of traveller.

Los Teñideros

Description : “Los Teñideros is the confluence point where two rivers join to form the River Celeste. This is where the magic happens, transforming the water into a bright, opaque blue thanks to a natural chemical reaction. This phenomenon is one of the reasons why the Rio Celeste is so famous. Visitors can stop here to observe the color change from clear to turquoise water.

Laguna Azul (Blue Lagoon)

Description : Laguna Azul is a small natural lagoon fed by the Rio Celeste. As its name suggests, this lagoon is a very deep blue in color and provides another picturesque vantage point. It’s an excellent place to rest and admire the scenery, surrounded by dense rainforest.

Borbollones

Description : Borbollones are areas of the river where the underlying volcanic activity is visible in the form of small bubbles and steam escaping from the water. These areas are ideal for observing the park’s geothermal energy.

Panoramic view of the Tenorio volcano

Description : The Tenorio volcano is visible from various points in the park. For more experienced hikers, longer trails lead to viewpoints offering panoramic views of the volcano’s peaks and the surrounding forest. These hikes are more demanding and require good physical condition, but the views of the volcanic landscape and rainforest are well worth the effort.

Fauna and flora

Tenorio Volcano National Park is home to an incredibly rich flora and fauna. The park’s biodiversity is due to its location in a transition zone between the low-lying regions of Guanacaste and the higher cloud forests. The Rio Celeste is a perfect ecosystem for many species.

Flora

The park is dominated by a dense vegetation of giant trees, ferns, mosses and orchids. The park’s cloud forests are particularly rich in epiphytes, plants that grow on other plants, often high up in the canopy.

Fauna

Tenorio Park is home to a wide variety of mammals, including tapirs, pumas, jaguars and howler monkeys. It is also a haven for many bird species, including the rare resplendent quetzal, toucans and macaws.

The park’s rivers and lagoons are also home to a variety of fish and amphibians, including some endemic species.

Activities close to the national park

The area surrounding the Tenorio volcano also offers a multitude of activities that perfectly complement a visit to the park. In fact, whether it’s the Rio Tenorio or its tributaries, the region’s waters are subject to indisputable geothermal activity. Whether you’re a lover of hiking, wildlife, outdoor adventure or simply looking to relax, the region offers a variety of experiences to suit all tastes.

Cocoa crops

Costa Rica is famous for its coffee crops, but cocoa is also well developed. Near Bijagua, several fincas offer the chance to discover this drink of the Gods. A visit to one of these plantations offers an excellent opportunity to learn more about the cultivation and production processes of these emblematic Costa Rican products.

Thermal springs

These springs offer relaxing hot baths in an exceptional natural setting. Less frequented than the Arenal, this is a natural paradise that we recommend. An excellent way to soothe tired muscles after a hike.

Tubing and rafting

The rivers, the terrain and the rapids of certain rivers are ideal for fun activities in the Tenorio Park area. Tubing is an activity accessible to all. Comfortably installed in a large buoy, you let yourself slide down the river.

Birdwatching

The Bijagua / Tenorio region is one of Costa Rica’s most popular for birdwatching, thanks to its forests, ecosystems, altitudes and climatic conditions influenced by the Caribbean and the Pacific. The region is home to over 300 resident species, and many migratory birds stop off in the wetlands. Numerous organizations offer birdwatching trips that stop off near Bijagua and Tenorio Park.

Birdwatchers should stop off at Tenorio during their trip to Costa Rica. You can easily see : toucans, motmots, hummingbirds, oropendolas, tanagers, the umbrella coracina, the golden-eared toucanet, the golden eagle, the great hocco, the bellbird (Araponga tricaronculata), the tigerbird, the hooded caique, the white-necked manakin, the rufous-winged callist… It’s a veritable bird sanctuary, and the reserves near the park are excellent observation spots.

Indigenous territories

The presence of the Maleku indigenous reserve, the only reserve of its kind in the entire north of the country, provides an opportunity to discover the way of life of the indigenous people and their history. The Maleku population currently numbers around 1,400. The Maleku indigenous territory is a must-visit place for its cultural tourism rich in traditions, dances, food and unique, colorful handicrafts.

Today, I’d like to talk about packing for travel and give you some tips on how to pack the perfect suitcase.

First, the choice of luggage

Some people prefer bags, while others prefer soft or hard cases.

All have their advantages and disadvantages, but it all depends on the trip you’re taking, where you’re going and how long you’re staying.

• For an itinerant trip, trek or hike, the ideal solution is of course a backpack.
Advantages: easy to carry.
Disadvantages: impractical access to gear.

• For a self-tour or guided tour, a rigid or flexible wheeled suitcase is the most practical.
Advantages: everything within easy reach.
Disadvantages: heavy to carry if you can’t roll it.

For destinations where you’ll have to take different planes, wheels are recommended, as airports can be very long to get through!

Cabin baggage should be light and easy to handle, but above all, it should allow you to keep your essentials with you for a few days in case your hold baggage is lost or misplaced.

What should I pack in my suitcase?

That’s the first question to ask yourself. Do I really need 5 T-shirts for 15 days? Will my fleece from my last trip to Norway really come in handy in Costa Rica?

Not being a list freak, I had a hard time getting to grips with the packing list. But now it’s become indispensable!

As the trip approaches, I mentally prepare myself and tell myself to think about this and that, which I add to the list so that I don’t forget the essentials.

2 or 3 days before, check your dirty laundry basket if you don’t have any items you’d like to take with you.

ORGANISE AND SEPARATE

Having travelled extensively, flown frequently and spent time in transit at airports, here is a short, non-exhaustive list of essentials you shouldn’t forget. Organised pouches make it quick and easy to find each item if you have organised them by theme: toiletries, medicines, electronics, etc.

For cabin baggage:

• An inflatable neck pillow for long flights or airport layovers
• If you have trouble sleeping during the day, an eye mask
• Your bedside book
• A notebook and pen
• Wet wipes
• Your tablet or smartphone
• A small toothbrush and toothpaste
• Skin cream
• For trips outside Europe, a few dozen US dollars
• Paracetamol or ibuprofen
• Tampons or sanitary towels
• Clothes for 2 or 3 days in case your main luggage is lost

For checked baggage:

• Clothing suitable for the climate of your destination country
• Clothing in a maximum of two or three colours so that you can mix and match and avoid unnecessary baggage
• Ziploc-type plastic bags for liquids, wet items, toiletries, etc.

The toiletry bag

• Toothbrush
• Toothpaste
• Small bar of soap
• Shampoo
• Comb
• Moisturiser
• Basic make-up
• Tweezers
• Razor and shaving foam
• Cotton buds
• Make-up remover wipes
• Deodorant
• Perfume. Opt for solid perfumes or concretes rather than glass bottles.
• Tampons and sanitary towels
• Nail file

The first aid kit

• bandages
• painkillers
• anti-diarrhoea medication
• sun cream
• after-sun lotion
• single-dose eye drops
• short-term treatments + prescription if prescription medication is required

Accessories

• universal chargers
• mains adapters
• torchlights and/or headlamps
• Swiss Army knife
• batteries
• water bottle
• cotton scarf that can be used as a belt, scarf, windbreaker, sand protector, sunscreen, bag strap… in short, an essential item that can be used for everything.

Making the most of the space in your suitcase

Before throwing everything into your suitcase, check the list you made a few days earlier (see above).

Start with your cabin baggage and only pack the essentials. Keep it handy, as it will come in useful if you forget any last-minute accessories. As a precaution, put your passports and visas in it immediately. It is unlikely that you will forget your suitcase. Checked luggage must comply with maximum weight limits, so keep a bathroom scale handy and check the weight regularly as you pack.

Choose your clothes and optimise by selecting only two or three colours so that you can easily coordinate them and avoid having anything superfluous.

Then opt for the rolling method (thank you Brigitte for suggesting it to me), which I highly recommend as it has proven very effective in saving space and preventing clothes from creasing. I even found a demonstration video. First, gather all the items you want to take with you. If you’re unsure about a particular item of clothing, leave it behind – you won’t need it. Then start by rolling your T-shirts, shorts and shirts as tightly as possible after folding them in half and tucking the sleeves inside, and do the same with your jumpers. Once everything is rolled up, put your underwear and socks in each of your shoes, wrapped in plastic bags, and place them around the edges of your suitcase. Then take your trousers and put them at the bottom of the suitcase, leaving the legs sticking out on one side. Next, place your toiletries bag, also wrapped in a ziplock bag, in the middle, then fill the space around it with all your rolled-up small items of clothing. Once you’ve finished, fill in the gaps with your first aid kit, accessory bags and other items. Finally, fold the trouser legs over the top. Secure with straps. And you’re done!

The rolling method is really perfect. The key is to have the right size suitcase. In any case, I’ve become a fan, and my linen shirts and light trousers come out looking spotless, which saves me from having to deal with wrinkled clothes during my holidays.

The key to a successful trip is good preparation. There’s nothing more unpleasant than when, at the other end of the world, you discover that you’ve forgotten the essentials, such as your razor, the flashlight that will come in so handy or your little one’s blankie.

Costa Rica Découverte gives you a few tips to help you prepare for your trip, and above all not to forget the essentials.

Before heading to Costa Rica:

check your travel documents and assemble them in a folder,

copies of your passports and driving licenses.

original driver’s license (no need for an international license)

First-aid kit essentials:

Paracetamol (avoid aspirin)

Antiseptic spray or individual packs

Gauze, plasters, bandages

Anti-diarrheal such as Peptobismol

High-protection sun cream

Safety pins

Mosquito repellent – In Costa Rica, you’ll find highly effective OFF in all grocery stores.

Carry on luggage, the essentials

Always pack a full carry-on bag so that you have 2 or 3 days’ worth of personal belongings in case your hold baggage doesn’t arrive.

Make a list about 15 days before departure, so that you have time to buy the last few things you need.
Prepare a light toiletry kit for the cabin.

Tricks:

Keep samples of hotel shampoos, soaps and creams, or buy small bottles to transfer your own products. If you have a regular perfume shop, ask them for a sample of your perfume (e.g. Yves Rocher, Sephora) and your usual creams. Mascara, eyeshadow and lipstick are allowed.

Exclude sharp objects: scissors, nail clippers, razor… If you shave mechanically, you’ll need to bring a small can of shaving foam or gel, as conventional formats will be rejected. You can try a razor, but there’s no guarantee that it will be accepted. If it is refused, you’ll find them at most airports.

If you are taking medical treatment, remember to take the corresponding prescription to prove the need for the medication.

Bring 2/3 days worth of clothing in the cabin, taking into account any excursions planned on arrival. Ideally, one piece of luggage per person. Bring comfortable shoes and always wear something a little warmer, even in the tropics.

If you plan to take part in rafting, canopy or canyoning activities, pack the necessary footwear and clothing in this bag.

Checked baggage

Clothing:

Make sure your clothing is light, in cotton, linen… Avoid synthetics. Lightweight pants for coastal areas and the dry season (jeans are to be avoided). If you’re staying in Tortuguero, on the Osa Peninsula, make sure your clothing dries quickly. Humidity levels are very high and thick cottons have difficulty drying.

The poncho is the ideal garment for a trip even in rainy weather. Cameras and binoculars are protected and easily accessible.

Bring a fleece or warmer clothing for all seasons. If you’re planning high-altitude visits, such as to the Poas and Irazu volcanoes, Turrialba and Chirripo, you’ll need warm clothing.

Accessories:

water bottle

binoculars and/or cameras

swimsuits and pareos instead of towels – the latter are very hard to dry.

cap or hat

sunglasses

plastic sandals

hiking and trekking shoes or plastic boots (ideal!)

Ziploc-type plastic bags of various sizes (for cameras and wet items)

electric torch (in the hold)

water bottle

Swiss Army knife (in hold)

For hiking enthusiasts, paradisiacal beach roads, waterfalls or trails from the Caribbean to the Pacific are just some of the options. Walking along trails that border heavenly beaches, crossing the country from coast to coast with nothing more than a backpack, experiencing the unique waterfalls and rock formations that cross the paths for hours on end make Costa Rica a world paradise for “trekking” or hiking. After all, we are a French and English speaking agency! This trend continues to grow, as Costa Rica’s exuberant nature allows for a vast array of hiking styles. Between national parks and private estates, stretches of varying length have been developed for all levels of difficulty. From 7 to 77 years old, as they say!

Ideas for hiking in Costa Rica

The country’s natural wealth offers a diversity of landscapes outside San Jose, just a few hours’ drive away.

Playa Quesera

The 17 roads that cross the Curú National Wildlife Reserve in the Gulf of Nicoya have a special ingredient that will attract hiking enthusiasts: Playa Quesera. To get there, you’ll have to walk about 6 kilometers to find the white-sand beach, perfect for snorkeling. The trails are not very difficult, so any physically active person can do the whole tour.

Camping under the waterfalls

Hidden in the mountains between San Isidro de El General and Playa Dominical is one of the highest waterfalls in the country, where as well as enjoying its majesty, you’ll have the chance to sleep in a cave hidden behind the falls.

Situated in the rainforest with an astonishing chain of waterfalls that starts at the top of a 400-meter row and ends with the highest waterfall in the country: Catarata Diamante, at 200 metres high. Continuing the hike, you’ll reach a semi-open cave called Casa de Piedra, where you can camp, but not in tents, but in sleeping bags on mattresses provided by the organization.

The famous Chirripo, between water and volcano

Canyons with rock walls over 300 metres high, spectacular waterfalls and exuberant flora and fauna lurk in the foothills of Cerro Chirripo. To get to the lodge, you’ll have to climb from 1,300 to 1,900 meters above sea level, a distance of 3.5 kilometers, which can take around two or three hours. Once at the top, you can descend to the canyon, which is four kilometers deep, and on the way back, there’s another 1.5 km hike to a waterfall called La Llorona.

From sea to sea

The Camino de Costa Rica is a 15-day journey from Barra de Parismina in the Caribbean to Quepos in the Pacific. The route is 280 kilometers long. You’ll interact with the Cabécar indigenous community, discover national parks, cross La Suiza de Turrialba, Pejibaye, Orosi, Dota, and begin the descent to the coast at Quepos, Puntarenas.

Of course, we could go on and on about other places that are perfect for hiking. Arenal, Monteverde, Pas and many others are places to discover on foot…

Costa Rica’s climate: some final details

Throughout this series of articles, we’ve explored Costa Rica’s climate. First, we discovered the main factors that influence Costa Rica’s climate: the intertropical convergence zone, the oceans, the mountains and the volcanoes. Next, we studied the influence of the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean on Costa Rica’s climate. We also learned how to understand Costa Rica’s climate in relation to your trip.

In this third installment, we’ll explore in depth how the Pacific coast and mountains behave in relation to Costa Rica’s climate.

Costa Rica’s climate: Pacific humidity gradient

We’ve already mentioned that the Pacific rainy season arrives in the South in mid-April, while the Guanacaste region receives its first showers in early June. But why is this?

To understand this, we need to look back at the geography of the Pacific coast, and go back in time to the appearance of the first landmasses. Indeed, 200 million years ago, an inter-oceanic channel separated the north of present-day Nicaragua from the north of South America. Gradually, a line of volcanoes began to emerge. These ancient volcanoes gave rise to the 4 Pacific peninsulas, and we can see them today as small rounded hills that have undergone 200 million years of erosion.

Outer island arc

Outer island arc: 200 million years ago, this volcanic archipelago gave rise to the territory of Costa Rica.

Santa Elena Peninsula (in the far north, near the Nicaraguan border).

Nicoya Peninsula (today home to Santa Teresa, Malpaís, Tambor, Paquera, Naranjo and Lepanto).

Herradura Peninsula (Tarcoles, Jacó)

Osa Peninsula (home to our beloved Corcovado)

Burica Peninsula (which forms the border with Panama)

These ancient volcanoes have served as wind redirection points throughout Costa Rica’s history. Moist winds arrive in Costa Rica from the south, from the Pacific, with the migration of the inter-tropical convergence zone in April. These first light winds unload on the southern coasts and gradually rise northwards. When they reach the Nicoya Peninsula, they are discharged into the Nicoya mountains, keeping the northern coasts and plains of Guanacaste free of rain during May.

It’s a phenomenon that can be observed in terms of biotopes along the Pacific.

Biotopes along the Pacific

Guanacaste: Tropical Dry Forest

Central Pacific: Tropical Wet Forest

South Pacific: Very Wet Tropical ForestDuring a trip to the Pacific during the dry season, it’s very interesting to observe the different adaptations of the same species throughout the Pacific, depending on the biotope in which it’s found. For example, in the north, the huge ficus trees spread out lengthwise to capture as much groundwater as possible. The same species in Corcovado spreads out at altitude to capture as much light as possible.

Tip for the hikers

If you’re looking for a multi-day trek in Corcovado National Park, it’s best to plan it between December and April to avoid bad weather. If you don’t mind bad weather, it’s also possible between April and August: it will rain, but the temperature will be more pleasant and the scenery more “dramatic”. Between September and November, it’s best to avoid trekking to Corcovado.

Day visits to Corcovado can be made at any time of year.

Costa Rica’s climate: How mountains and volcanoes behave

Costa Rica is crossed from north to south by a chain of mountains and volcanoes that divide the country into 2 halves.

As a general rule, precipitation occurs in the middle elevations of Costa Rica’s mountains and volcanoes (~1000 m). In fact, from mid-altitudes upwards, mountains and volcanoes gradually rise to this level, then become isolated peaks and mountain passes that prevent the rising winds from crossing them.

This is not to say that it doesn’t rain from 1000 m upwards. But heavy precipitation is cumulative

Convective thunderstorms exist on the Caribbean side of volcanoes and mountains. These are created by the collision of warm air masses from the Caribbean, which cool down as they hit the mountain ranges and are thrown back onto the plains and foothills. This is one of the reasons for the instability of the Caribbean in relation to the Pacific.

Tips for hikers

The high mountains and volcanoes are influenced by both the Caribbean and the Pacific. That’s why it’s so difficult to predict good weather when hiking in Chirripó National Park or La Amistad International Park.

Indeed, for good weather to occur in these mountain ranges, the Caribbean and Pacific weather conditions must be optimal, which is rarely the case. March is one of the best periods in this respect, but there is no guarantee that conditions will be as good as desired.

There is one isolated case in the Talamanca mountain range: Cerro Kamuk (3554 m). Access to this mountain is via the Pacific (Tres Colinas de Potrero Grande), but the Kamuk massif is almost entirely under the influence of the Caribbean. For this reason, the months of March and October are ideal for climbing.

However, I’d advise all mountaineering enthusiasts to arm themselves with suitable clothing and plenty of patience. The Cordillera de Talamanca always surprises, both positively and negatively.

Did you know that the best time to snorkel in Costa Rica is from January to April? Yes, this is the best time for snorkeling in Costa Rica, with water temperatures ranging from 81 to 88 degrees.

Today, let’s take a look at some of Costa Rica’s interesting snorkeling spots. Of course, given the country’s natural maritime wealth, almost any beach or access to the sea in general is suitabl

The best snorkeling spots

East coast – The Caribbean

Cahuita National Park

The fantastic spot on the east coast (Caribbean) is the coral reef of Cahuita National Park, a short distance from Puerto Limón. Here you’ll find a protected coral reef with over 100 different types of fish and 30 types of coral. The reef surrounds Playa Blanca and Puerto Vargas. It’s highly recommended to take the coastal road of around 10 kilometers.

Other close snorkeling locations:

Manzanillo (Beach)

Playa Cocles and Punta Uva (to the south of Puerto Viejo)

West coast – Pacific Ocean

The best snorkeling spots are on the islands off the coast. On the west coast there are several islands where you can go snorkeling. You’ll need to hire a boat or take a snorkeling excursion.

The islands of the Pacific

Isla del Caño

This is one of the most beautiful snorkeling spots in Costa Rica. In the water and coral reefs you’ll find, among other things, turtles, rays, puffer fish and pagres (sea bream). From Uvita, Drake Bay and Sierpe, you can travel to this island in around 1.5 hours

Isla del Coco

This island is located some 500 kilometers off the coast of Costa Rica (about a day and a half’s sailing). Not exactly a destination for a short snorkeling trip. But if you get the chance to visit this protected marine reserve and its national park, do it! It’s actually the most beautiful diving spot (and dive site) in Costa Rica. And depending on your tastes, many refer to it as the best dive spot in the world. Apart from the keepers, the island is uninhabited. It has an information center and a few facilities.

Other interesting snorkeling islands:

Isla Tortuga (in Nicoya Bay, near Playa Órganos)

Isla Ballena (near Arco Playa)

Isla Choro (near Playa Sámara)

Islas Catalinas (near Playa Danta)

Finally, here are some other diving spots on Costa Rica’s west coast, accessible from the beach

Conchal Beach (Guanacaste)

Brasilito Beach (Guanacaste)

Manzanillo Beach (Culebra Bay)

Uvita Beach (Marino Ballena National Park, Osa)

Manuel Antonio (Biesanz Beach and Manuel Antonio Beach)

We could go on and on with the list of great snorkeling spots in Costa Rica. But surely, once you’ve visited all these places, you’ll be satiated!

Tamarindo is a small town on Costa Rica’s North Pacific coast. It’s a vibrant beach community where families, surfers and retirees mingle. There’s something for everyone here.

The town is small enough to walk from one end to the other, yet offers souvenir stores, restaurants, bars and surf boutiques. Tamarindo is also considered to have the best nightlife in Guanacaste province. Tamarindo is a favorite destination for young travelers, students and travelers looking to meet and socialize with foreigners and expatriates.

Outside Tamarindo, you can explore the surrounding area and discover other natural attractions. Nearby, you’ll find Las Baulas National Park, home to a large population of leatherback turtles. You can also visit Rincon de la Vieja National Park, famous for its volcanoes, hot springs and waterfalls.

Tamarindo is generally very touristy, especially during the high season from November to April. It’s advisable to book your accommodation in advance, so you’ll have plenty of choice.

What to do at Tamarindo?

As the town is rather moderate in size, all things being equal (we’re still in Costa Rica, aren’t we?), the activities on offer here are constantly growing. But here’s a non-exhaustive list of what you can do in Tamarindo:

Distance from Liberia: 75 km (approx. 1h30 drive)

Beach condition: public beach

Sand type: brown sand, partially rough/partially smooth beach

To take into account before coming

For travelers looking to visit a popular beach town, Tamarindo would be your best choice in the entire North Pacific region. This town is one of Costa Rica’s largest and most commercial beaches, much more developed than its neighboring beaches (Real, Conchal and Flamingo). Travelers who choose to stay in town have access to a wide variety of dining and shopping options, the majority of which are within walking distance of the beach.

Travelers wishing to participate in a number of excursions/activities during their beach stay will find almost everything they’re looking for in Tamarindo. If you want to get away from it all for a day, there are several other, much quieter beach options nearby.

As Tamarindo is a fairly developed area, this beach town offers countless accommodation options ranging from budget hostels and hotels to superior and resort hotels. Accepting a variety of vacation budgets, Tamarindo is sure to have an accommodation option made for any traveler.

Above all, Tamarindo is the ideal surfing town. For anyone looking to surf, wanting to learn to surf, needing to buy surf equipment, and/or wanting to be part of Costa Rica’s surf culture, Tamarindo is the place for you.

Main drawback: it’s not the real Costa Rica

Given its popularity, Tamarindo is more “the place to be” than “the place to go to get away from it all”. The area attracts a mixed crowd – a population of young singles drawn to the area for its surf, as well as family travelers impressed by the variety of excursions and activities on offer (especially activities in which children can participate). For travelers who would prefer a less populated town and/or a beach, Tamarindo unfortunately doesn’t offer this type of setting.

That said, while staying in Tamarindo, you can also explore the surrounding area and enjoy the vibrant nightlife on your return. If you want to sleep in the middle of the jungle, don’t bother and take a look at Corcovado!

L’article Tamarido, the town of the Pacific est apparu en premier sur Costa Rica Découverte.
