Day 1 : Villanueva de la Boca del Monte, formerly known as San José, is the capital of Costa Rica. At an altitude of 1,150 m, the city enjoys one of the 3 best climates in the world: 23°C on average! Some districts are worth a visit, such as Barrio Amon, with its neoclassical architecture, and Barrio Escalante, with its many small restaurants.
Since the 1970s, the capital has experienced an economic boom, with suburban expansion and a strong presence of universities. San José, with its 1,500,000 inhabitants, is a cosmopolitan city.
A little disconcerting at first, it’s easy to fall under the spell of this constantly bustling city. A capital full of life and color.

La Fortuna, a small town at the foot of the Arenal volcano, is not the one that attracts visitors, but rather the many breathtaking sites that surround it. The legendarily perfect cone of the volcano makes the region a must-see.
Volcanic activity in the form of lava flows ceased in 2009. However, the steam still escaping from the crater and the warmth of the thermal waters flowing through the area are clear signs that the colossus lives on.
Suspension bridges, zip lines, waterfalls and thermal springs are musts.
The national park is home to ancient lava flows and exceptional birdlife.
Canyoning is also a popular activity at Lake Arenal.

Days 6 and 7 : This region, situated between the Arenal and Miravalles volcanoes, is ideally located for nature lovers and birdwatchers of all kinds. Activities such as horseback riding, tubing and hiking are very popular, as are bird and mammal watching. A visit to the Tenorio National Park and its famous Rio Celeste, the celestial blue river, remains the area’s highlight. Climatic conditions influenced by the Caribbean and the Pacific make this a first-rate place for observing numerous species such as birds, tapir, puma, sloths, anteaters, coatis, frogs, butterflies…

ON THE AGENDA:

• Guide hikes Mesa Norte – Mirador Panoramico : A 3.5-kilometre round-trip hike that starts with a gentle climb through the woods, then to an open path and finally a steeper climb for the last 250 metres before reaching a small plateau. From the summit, you can see all the volcanoes of Guanacaste: Miravalles, Rincon de la Vieja and Tenorio. It’s a fantastic spot for stargazing and enjoying 360 degrees of unspoilt nature in the moonlight. The view from here is heavenly!

Days 8, 9 and 10 : This part of the Guanacaste coast is one of the most popular in the country.
Tamarindo has developed intensively and offers a perfect seaside resort where restaurants follow souvenir stores. The region’s beaches are among the most beautiful in the country, even if the crowds have taken some of the charm away.
It’s the ideal place for sports enthusiasts who enjoy surfing, jet skiing, kayaking, diving and horseback riding. Playa Tamarindo, Playa Grande, Playa Negra, Playa Avellana and Playa Langosta are perfect for learning or perfecting the surfing that is so popular here.
Las Baulas National Park is one of the most important nesting grounds for leatherback turtles.

ON THE AGENDA:

• Kayak and snorkeling tour + juice bar – Duration : 2:30 : Discover the seabed of Capitán Island: white sand, coral reef, tropical fish, rays, dolphins and, depending on the season, whales. Equipment, park entrance and bottle of water included.

Day 11 : To the northwest of the capital, Alajuela welcomes visitors from all over the world, as the airport is located on its territory.
In addition to the city, its proximity to the Poás volcano makes it a privileged location. The flanks of the volcano are covered with coffee crops, and most of the country’s strawberries come from here.
Volcano viewing is best done early in the morning, then don’t miss the gardens and waterfalls of La Paz, a true concentrate of Costa Rica.
Since the volcano’s last eruption in 2019, work has been carried out to protect the public from the crater’s fumes. Tickets must now be booked online, and time in the park is limited to 20 minutes to protect the public from fumes, bearing in mind that the crater is one of the most acidic lakes in the world, with a PH of between 0 and 0.5.
Although its turquoise color is an invitation to swim, not many organisms can survive in this environment.

An ideal family activity!

• Entrance to Poas Volcano National Park : It is one of the country’s 5 most active volcanoes. Its immense, easily observable crater made it the country’s most visited national park. The volcano erupted in April 2017 and has been in constant activity ever since. Its plume of smoke is regularly visible from the surrounding area.
